Felecia Brown – Scarborough Shooting Stars Assistant Coach
By Aaron Mathew
Scarborough Shooting Stars assistant coach Felecia Brown is inspiring women around the city through her new job.
Brown is one of the few female assistant coaches in the CEBL right now, and she is aware about the impact of her position, not just for her, but also for others around her.
She said, “I appreciate it so much, because I have girls that reach out to me and say, ‘Thank you so much for being a role model for me. I see you there and I know I could be there one day.”
“Sometimes I have to sit back and think to myself that like, maybe I am that person making change for someone else.”
After starting her basketball journey at the age of 11, Brown couldn’t pursue her playing career because of personal reasons, and had to stop before university. But that didn’t affect her passion for the game.
Brown, who moved to Toronto from Winnipeg in 2016 to work in public relations and event management, revealed she still attended games, while also getting her influencer clients into celebrity games.
After six years of working in PR, Brown made multiple connections, which is how she got the assistant coaching job with the Shooting Stars just two weeks after leaving her PR agency.
“I was so thrilled because I always had a passion for basketball, and I never got to fully play as a player. So, when (this job) was presented to me, I was like, 100-per-cent yes,” she said.
Through her networking she was able to land a coaching gig for the boys and girls team at the Royal Crown Academic School, which is also where the Shooting Stars practice.
And no one is rooting harder for Brown than the young girls she coaches at the Academy.
“It's exciting to know that I have a little army of girls behind me, cheering me on in this new journey that I definitely never even dreamed about,” she revealed.
She is one out of the four female assistant coaches in the league right now. The number is only going to be increasing, and Brown is part of the movement that is paving the way for more female coaches in basketball.
