The Scarborough Shooting Stars have selected St. Francis Xavier forward and U SPORTS Defensive Player of the Year David Muenkat in the first round and Toronto Metropolitan University guard David Walker in the second round of the 2023 CEBL U SPORTS Draft.
This is Muenkat’s second season as a U SPORTS player with the Shooting Stars. The Brampton native averaged 5.3 points and 3.5 rebounds in 11.2 minutes per game over 17 games with Scarborough last season, and was recognized as runner-up for the CEBL U SPORTS Player of the Year award. Muenkat had a monster year for the X-Men this season. He averaged 16.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals in 24.5 minutes per game. The national silver medalist was named AUS and USPORTS Defensive Player of the Year, AUS First Team All-Star, U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian and StFX Most Valuable Player.
"David's development has been astronomical since last summer. He led St.FX to the national championship game and the confidence he developed as a pro was evident in his play this past U SPORTS season,” said general manager Brady Heslip. “We expect David to continue to be an integral part of our team, and show how his superior athleticism and developing skill set translates into winning basketball. He can guard multiple positions and adds significant value with his ability to rebound. We are excited to have David back this season."
Toronto guard, David Walker, was Scarborough’s second round pick. He averaged 16.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.3 assist and 1.9 steals in 26.5 minutes per game for TMU this season. The 6-foot-4 guard scored over 20 points in 10 games and was named U SPORTS Player of the Week on March 1 after averaging 32 points in back-to-back games verse McMaster and Ottawa.
"David really impressed us with his play for TMU this past season, and we are very excited to have him as one of our U Sports players,” said Heslip. “He brings a tenacious defensive mentality, is a very skilled offensive player, and overall he is a great competitor. His size and athleticism will enable him to make an immediate impact in our league and we expect that he will develop into a major contributor. We are very excited to have him on board and look forward to his development into a pro this summer."
Following an impressive inaugural season, the Shooting Stars open their 2023 season on May 26 at the CAA Centre, in a rematch of last year’s CEBL championship game versus the Brampton Honey Badgers. Scarborough welcomes the Winnipeg Sea Bears to the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre for their first home game on June 2.
